After almost twenty years, the protagonist of The Fight Club gets back behind the camera to direct his second feature film. Motherless Brooklyn – Orphans of Brooklyn, in Mexico – is a criminal drama of the time, with a multi-star cast (headed by Edward Norton himself) and that undoubtedly we are pleased to see interacting in this first trailer.

So is. Among the stories that joined the project are Bruce Willis, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Bobby Cannavale, Leslie Mann, Willem Dafoe and Alec Baldwin. From the acting field, for now, it seems that the new Warner Bros. film will arrive solid on the screens of the next Toronto International Film Festival, where it will feature a special presentation.

A synopsis, cited from Collider, tells us the following:

«Against the background of the 50s in New York, Motherless Brooklyn follows Lionel Essrog (Norton), a private detective who suffers from Tourette syndrome, while trying to solve the murder of her mentor and only friend, Frank Minna (Willis). Before a mystery that takes him from jazz clubs in Harlem to the slums of Brooklyn and, finally, to the corridors of power in New York, Lionel will face thugs, corruption and the most powerful man in the city, with the purpose of honoring his friend and saving the woman who could be his own salvation

After TIFF 2019, Motherless Brooklyn will premiere in the US inside the New York Film Festival, next October 11. The first of November will begin its run on the American commercial circuit. Brooklyn orphans will premiere in Mexico on December 6.

In New York in 1954, Brooklyn King Frank Minna (Bruce Willis) is killed. Detective Lionel Essrog (Edward Norton), who took jobs not very legal for Minna, is trying to solve the murder. The researcher suffers from Tourette's syndrome and, therefore, suffers involuntary muscle contractions, accompanied by misplaced words, which makes him particular in the police force.

Edward Norton directs, writes and stars in this film Noir, which relocates the story of the homonymous novel from the 1990s to the 1950s. So the film takes place in an atmosphere full of people with raincoats and hats. However, Norton's private investigator is an interesting hero with his Tourette syndrome, and parallels with gentrification, racism and power games make Motherless Brooklyn's protagonist a charming genre character.

With his second film in the director's seat, Norton (Keeping the Faith, 2000) portrays very well the 1950s, where people conspired against their enemies, with slow-paced air and leisurely actions, and where everyone listened to jazz , even the underlying music consists of a playful trumpet in the most discreet scenes.
The style of the film is also like a trip back to the Noire era in New York, with a persistent voiceover in the background, slow stories and mysterious men lurking in the corners. The details of the film evoke the era, particularly in the well-designed costumes of Amy Roth and the production design by Beth Mickle. The master cinematography of Dick Pope (The Illusionist, Mr. turner) creates a perfect atmosphere of black cinema mixed with the sobriety of the working class while the neon lights and smoking clouds of jazz clubs celebrate the different communities and neighborhoods that They give flavor to a city as rich as New York. Motherless Brooklyn is the kind of beautifully designed and relevant film that mature audiences see very rarely these days.

The convoluted plot will surely dazzle some viewers, but it is a key component of all the mysteries with noir inflection. The central books of the genre were written around the Second World War through the Cold War, and illustrated a crazy world, where the protagonist could never trust the word of another, and there was always more crucial hidden information than was reported . The sense of disorientation that accompanies the novels and films of the films of the genre is a characteristic, not a mistake.

Apart from Norton and Willis, the cast has names like Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Bobby Cannavale, Cherry Jones, Michael K. Williams, Leslie Mann, Ethan Suplee, Dallas Roberts, Josh Country, Robert Ray Wisdom, Fisher Stevens, Alec Baldwin and Willem Dafoe
