Hustlers is a 2019 American crime drama film written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, based on New York magazine’s 2015 article “The Hustlers at Scores” by Jessica Pressler. The film stars Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez, Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, Lizzo, and Cardi B. The plot follows a crew of strippers in New York City who begin to steal money by drugging stock traders and CEOs who visit their club, then running up their credit cards. Lopez is also a producer on the film through Nuyorican Productions, alongside Jessica Elbaum, Will Ferrell, and Adam McKay through their Gloria Sanchez banner.
First announced in February 2016, the film was originally set to be financed and distributed by Annapurna Pictures. But amid financial trouble, Annapurna dropped the rights in October 2018. After STX Entertainment picked them up, much of the cast joined that fall through the following spring, and filming took place in New York City from March to May 2019.
Since set pics from Jennifer Lopez’s latest flick, Hustlers, which is being dubbed the “stripper movie,” started emerging, it’s generated massive buzz, thanks in large part to J. Lo and an all-star team that includes Constance Wu, Cardi B, Julia Stiles, Lizzo, Keke Palmer, and Lili Reinhart. We’ve started our official countdown to the movie’s fall release.
The film is loosely based on Jessica Pressler’s 2016 New York Magazine feature “The Hustlers at Scores,” which tells the real life tale of a savvy group of exotic dancers, led by Roselyn Keo and Samantha Barbash, who steal from their (predominantly) wealthy clients…. and a few who weren’t.
When Lopez recently screened the film, she admitted that seeing it all go down made her feel a tad ill. “When I watched the movie for the first time, I was like, a little bit sick to my stomach,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I was like, ‘Oh my God! What are they doing? They are going to kill this guy!'” she said, referring to a scene in which the strippers “hustle” one of their wealthy clients. “They were playing with fire.”
Lopez added, “I’m a by-the-book kind of person. Like, I’m always afraid. I don’t want to jaywalk or anything. They’re going to get me!”
Well, besides J.Lo—who is playing the group’s ringleader, Ramona—we’ve also got Constance Wu, Madeline Brewer of The Handmaid’s Tale, Julia Stiles, who portrays Jessica Pressler, Keke Palmer, Cardi B, Riverdale’s Lili Reinhart, and Lizzo are all starring.
