Guy Ritchie is returning to form after the billion dollar musical experiment that was the Aladdin remake. Faster than Brad Pitt can say “caravan,”, the filmmaker is back and ready to promote a new and much more traditional Ritchian offering:
The Gentlemen, a snazzy crime comedy starring a roster of famous gents, from Matthew McConaughey to Hugh Grant.
The Gentlemen revolves around Mickey Pearson (McConaughey), an ex-pat in London looking to shuffle off his weed empire (The Beach Bum, but make it posh).
The big sell draws the attention of British ne’er-do-wells all around, including a villain played by magnificently coiffed Crazy Rich Asians breakout Henry Golding. The rest of the cast is rounded out by Hugh Grant as Fletcher, the titillated narrator who speaks in a sort of Cockney swirl; Colin Farrell, Charlie Hunnam, and Michelle Dockery. Also, Succession-hive, Jeremy Strong (aka Kendall Roy)
He plays someone named Cannabis Kingpin Mathew, per IMDb, which was definitely one of Kendall’s alter-egos in his druggier days. Also, let this be your reminder that even though the Succession cast is full of Secretly British and Australian People (including Tom Wamsgans and Shiv), Strong is not one of them.
The Gentlemen does not yet have a set release date. It is still unclear how, exactly, Ritchie found the time to make this incredibly star-studded movie in between all his Aladdin responsibilities. People were still joining the cast last winter (back when the movie was still being called Toff Guys…), while Aladdin was wrapping filming, which means he practically threw himself into the new project. It’s a staggering, speedy artistic two-step, the likes of which have not been seen since Ariana Grande followed up Sweetener mere months later with Thank U, Next. Learning from the best!
