Jayla Darden is looking to breathe fresh air into a new wave of R&B. After the bubbling success of her Ideas series, she notched a deal with Interscope Records earlier in 2019. The Detroit native delivered the Onto Something EP on Tuesday (Nov. 5), which served as her first endeavor under the Interscope umbrella.
The seven-track effort finds the Aaliyah-inspired artist starring front and center as a one-man band of sorts, as the project was entirely written, mixed, mastered and produced by Jayla. The 21-year-old singer bares her soul to open up about personal matters that are weaved into slow jams and a singing voice that ranges into a lane reminiscent of Kehlani.
“Onto Something is my first release through Sick Projects/Interscope. I grew up in Detroit and moved to LA last year to work on this EP, which I wrote, produced, mixed and mastered myself,” she tells Billboard.
“Onto Something is my take on real-life experiences ranging from relationships to personal struggles. Ultimately, this collection of songs serves as a reminder to choose positivity even in negative situations.”
