The penguins (Spheniscidae) are a family of birds, the only one of the order Sphenisciformes. They are sea birds, not flying, that are distributed almost exclusively in the southern hemisphere, except for the Galapagos penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus). The name of the order comes from the word spheniscus which comes from the Greek σφήν (sphen, ‘wedge') and the diminutive suffix -iscus, literally “wedge”, referring to its hydrodynamic shape when swimming.
